Pull-up a Chair - Let’s Fuel Something Better Together
WD Biotech exists to help people understand how food really works, who’s shaping it, and what becomes possible when we pay attention. Why? Because we have a future to feed.
Key Definitions
Alternative Proteins
Alternative proteins are plant-based and food-technology alternatives to animal protein. They include food products made from plants (for example, grains, legumes, and nuts), fungus (mushrooms), algae, and even cultured (lab-grown) meat.
Cultivated Meat
Cultivated meat is meat produced directly from cells. The process of cultivating meat uses the basic elements needed to build muscle and fat and enables the same biological process that happens inside an animal. Cultivated meat is identical to conventional meat at the cellular level.
Imagine your chicken dinner grown in a lab - you can because it’s happening!
Precision Fermentation
Precision fermentation is a branch of engineering biology that uses the natural abilities of certain microorganisms like yeast to produce high-quality, low-cost ingredients sustainably and quickly.
This process has been used for decades in food production to produce common ingredients such as rennet (used in cheesemaking) and citric acid (a common preservative used in conventional meat products, and as an emulsifier in dairy products).
Plant-based Meat
Plant-based meat are products made from plants or other raw-material alternatives to animal-based products.
